Burriana by Night

Mr. and Mrs. Smith decided to experience ”Burriana by night” and enjoy an evening on Burriana Beach. They brought Gucciana, the elegant Gucci bag, as they set off on the short walk down to the beach. The walk only took a few minutes but offered a wonderful view of the sparkling Mediterranean Sea as they approached the shore.

Once they reached the beach, they were greeted by a lively atmosphere. Young people were playing volleyball and enjoying the last rays of sunshine before it got dark. The couple paused for a moment to admire the spectacle and feel the energy that filled the air. Gucciana hung elegantly over Mrs. Smith’s arm, adding to their stylish appearance as they explored the beach promenade.

The promenade along Burriana Beach was filled with restaurants where adults in Mr. and Mrs. Smith’s age group gathered to enjoy a delightful dinner. With its sophisticated design and stylish appearance, Gucciana fit perfectly into these establishments. The couple could choose from various dining options and savor a meal while admiring the romantic atmosphere and the sound of waves washing up on the shore.

With Gucciana by their side, the couple felt both chic and comfortable as they mingled among the other guests on the beach promenade. Gucciana kept their belongings secure while adding a touch of luxury to their evening experience.

After enjoying a wonderful dinner at Bruxelles and experiencing the unique atmosphere of the beach promenade, it was time for the couple to take a romantic walk along the beach again. As the sun slowly set over the horizon, they created memories that would stay with them forever.

So, with Gucciana in hand, Mr. and Mrs. Smith continued to explore ”Burriana by night.” They enjoyed watching the young people play volleyball on the beach and experienced the charming atmosphere of the beach promenade where adults gathered to enjoy a fantastic evening.

Get back in the saddle – let´s go for a paddle

Good morning! Another beautiful day to enjoy here in Nerja. I´m Paddly, the paddle bag. I am the structure and the stamina. I could be your personal trainer, as I know a lot about exercise.

Ok, here we go. The first thing you need to do is to decide that you are willing to do the work. Motivation is the key and visualizing where you want to be. No one else does it for you. Then you must make your own routine. It´s easy really. Decide what kind of training you want to do and get out of your bed. Here in Nerja, there are so many things to choose from: Golf, running, different gyms, cross-fit, tennis, swimming, and yoga are a few examples.

Mr and Mrs Smith decides on today’s ventures

While you think we can do some warming up, stand up and raise your arms straight up into the air. Breathe. Now flex… Sorry, I hear Mr. and Mrs. Smith talking. They´ve just woken up. They are also speaking of exercise today.
– But Janet, Mr. Smith says. It is so lovely to take a lazy morning, making it into another one of the lazy days. We can do some workout tomorrow instead

– If you always say “tomorrow” you will never work out. There will never be a better day than today, Janes said.
– Ok. What do you want to do?
– It would be nice to try out the paddle court nearby.
– In paddle, you need to be four.
– We can ask our neighbors Johan and Sofia to join in. It would be nice to get to know them a bit more.
– The tired couple? Do you think they are awake yet?
– If not, they will wake up when I call them.
– Poor people. Let them sleep. And me too.
– No Gary, it’s almost nine. If you go to bed earlier you don’t have to sleep all morning.
– But the nights are so magical in Nerja. I love to sit on the upper terrace and listen to the cicadas.
– And drink local beer.
– Aow, that hurts. I want to live each day to the fullest, you know.
I hear a clattering sound. I think she pats his belly.
– Up we go, the day is already long gone. I will go and call Johan and Sofia.

That’s right Janet. Good on you! Exercise is the way to good health and longevity. And of course, what you eat and drink. Ok, the last words are easy for me, Paddly, as I don´t have to eat nor drink. I am one of the bags that the Smith couple has at their villa in Nerja.
It’s a good choice to let Johan and Sofia join in. You need to be fit when you work as much as he does. He should definitely sleep more, drink less coffee, and play more paddle.

At the paddle court

Finally, here I stand on the bench at Club de Tenis y Padel La Raqueta. It wasn’t easy for poor Mrs. Smith to get Mr. Smith here – he always uses his painful leg as an excuse when he doesn’t want to do a certain thing. But Mrs. Smith found this nice paddle court just 200 m from their house. Then she had to manage to get the tired couple Johan and Sofia out of bed.

Now the game is on and Johan is complaining about missing the balls from the Smiths. He slept so bad last night, he says. Sofia says that they should have had more coffee. Not even the intense blue light of Costa del Sol is enough to get Johan and Sofia awake. After 15 minutes they are all having a nice game. They like it because the rules are simple and it’s easier than tennis as the ball can bounce using the walls.

Learn paddle from the best

While you are in Nerja you might want to learn paddle from those who are trainers. In Nerja there is Sebastian at Padel Nerja and he is located at Hotel Parador.

Rio Chillar – a walk on water

From Sacky´s point of view

Is that Gary´s voice? I´m the only one that calls him that, except Mrs. S, Janet I mean. Everybody says Mr. S nowadays. He is getting old, like me. But he is not shabby like I´ve become. Doesn´t hear or see as bad. I remember when he got me. He was five and about to start school. He was so happy and so was I. We really liked each other. He carried me and me, his schoolbooks. We were a great team, from the first day until he started year 5. Then he thought I was a bit too uncool. Put me away in a closet. But he kept me. I´m still around, even though he never takes me with him. He wants me as a souvenir from the past I guess.

Today Gary and Janet are going to Rio Chillar. I´ve just heard about it. Carrie, Gary´s new backpack, is happy. She loves adventures. We´ve been arguing a lot. Since the trip to the caves, she has become friendly to me the other week and told me all about it.
Now Gary is appearing. He reaches out for Carrie but freezes in his motion. Looks at me, on the lowest bolsa-hook, and I think I can see a touching glance in his eyes. Yes, he actually picks me up.
– My old backpack, he says. Will you join me on this adventure?
If he only could hear my thousand yes´s! The team reunited!

I sit in the backseat instead of the trunk. It´s nicer and I can hear what they talk about. Janet says that they could have walked instead of taking the car. It´s only 1,5 km to the river. River? So they are going for a swim? I thought they were going for a walk.

It turns out that it is both (kind of). It is a walk but in the river. The water is so low that you only get your feet (and sometimes your knees) wet. Well, I don´t need to bother 😊. I cling on to Gary. It´s quite an easy walk, even though the ground sometimes is bumpy and you don´t always see where you put your feet in the water. There are often rock walls on both sides of us. They form an alley and provide shades. The exotic vegetation together with the sound of hundreds of birds makes you feel that you are a part of nature. Vado de Los Patos is a marvelous spot where the water forms a pond and there is also a waterfall. Gary and Janet stop for a swim. It looks nice and cool. In some places, the water runs fast, in other places it´s slow. Like now. The rippling tone of the slow running water is so calming. I feel like I´m young again. All problems are gone. I´m getting used again. Gary´s backpack. As it was meant to be.

Now it´s the very last bit on the walk back. Then the bottom in me bursts. All things that I carry fall out into the river. Gary cries in anger. Swearing about his old useless bag. Janet and Gary get help from other walkers collecting all stuff, and someone gives Gary a plastic bag to put the things in. I feel ashamed. I feel Old. Can they repair me? Will they repair me?

On the way back to the car Gary stops in front of a trashcan.
– Are you sure that we can´t fix him, Janet? He is very dear to me.
– He´s too old and shabby, says Janet. Let him go, Gary.
– OK. Goodbye Sacky, he says. Thanks for everything.
Then he squeezes me into the trashcan and all goes dark around me.

How sad a story is when someone dies.
Even when he is tacky.
Back home in Nerja every bolsa cries.
Here ends the tale of Sacky.

The unique restaurant Unico in Nerja

– From Guccianas point of view
Good day my dear friends! I must say that it really is a lovely day here in Nerja. It’s 32 degrees, with crystal clear blue skies, and such a bright light here. Let me introduce myself – I am Gucciana, the stylish bag on the top hook in Mr. and Mrs. Smith´s villa in Royal Palm. My proprietor, Mrs. Smith, hung me there so the bags below can look up to me and admire me.
It’s been yonks since I’ve been out dining. Mr. and Mrs. S have been staying in the house or by the pool after moving here. They really love it! But lately, I´ve been hearing Mrs. S complaining about not going out. They are actually discussing it right now and I can hear them talking from upstairs.
– Isn’t it about time to get out and find a nice restaurant, dear? Mrs. S says.
– Well, it´s so nice here. I can make you…
He is looking in the pantry I hear.
– …noodles. Noodles are nice.
– Or we go to a restaurant, says Mrs. S.
I know that tone.
– Or we go to a restaurant, says Mr. S. Do you know a good one?
– Yes, I’ve read about Unico. It seems to be something else.
– Unico! says Mr. S. I know Unico for sure! You must book several days in advance to get a table!
– I know that, says Mrs. S. I´ve already booked.
– But how..? says Mr. S.
– Do you know what day it is?
– Eh Saturday…?
– And our wedding day.
Silence.
– Oh, Janet…, says Mr. S. Today? Yes, how could I forget? I wouldn’t make it without you, you know that don’t you?
Mrs. S says that she knows he will never forget, it just hasn’t hit him yet. They laugh. Same thing every year. Mrs. S picks me up at six a clock and the three of us take a walk through the town of Nerja in the balmy wind. We pass narrow streets and beautiful houses on the way to Unico.
At Unico Alicia meets us and leads us to a nice table for two, three I mean. She disappears and comes back with her husband Alex. They congratulate the S couple and tell them that they have run this restaurant together since 2018. They met in London and this is their dream. Maybe that’s why the service and the whole atmosphere are so welcoming.

Mr. and Mrs. S get a menu, then an appetizer, following bread, olive oils, and water. I get the place of honor, on the table beside Mrs. S, so I can see what they eat. And everyone can see me. Mr. and Mrs. S start with a glass of Cava while studying the menu. Then Mr. and Mrs. S. has a marvelous three-course meal. You can see what they had in the window below. I wish I was able to eat. What I hear from Mr. and Mrs. S is that the taste is outstanding. When the desert arrives it says “Happy Anniversary” on the plates. How charming!
Something has happened to the S couple during their visit to Unico. They are holding hands on the way home and stop a few times to kiss. Back home I can hear them in their bedroom. My bashfulness stops me from telling anymore. What a night! More of the adventures from Mr. and Mrs. S are to come…

A breath-taking trip to the caves of Nerja

From Carries point of view

Hi!

I´m Carrie, Mr Smith’s backpack. I´ve just woken up after a bad night’s sleep. The other bags around me, hanging on the same bag hanger, snore or twist and make it hard to sleep. But a bag doesn´t need to sleep much, it doesn´t consume so much energy. Mostly it hangs around. Anyway, all the bags here are excited to go on new adventures. That´s what we are made for.

Wait! Now I can hear Mrs Smith. She´s talking about some caves. Yes! They will go to the caves of Nerja, they say. Mr S comes to the hanger. He is standing in front of us. Who will he pick? Please take me! No! He reaches out for Sacky! But changes his mind. Looking at Paddly for a second (they are not going to paddle I guess) and then… pics me! Yey! I will go to the caves! I will go to the dark and… scary caves! Help! How creepy is it in there? Whatever, I will cling on to Mr S and seek shelter at his back.
Mrs S says she wants to go by foot, it’s only a few kilometers from our new house, but Mr S says that he has trouble with his leg and wants to save it for the caves. Mrs S finds that strange. It’s never any problem on the golf course. They can take the car or the red train, says Mr S who pretends like he doesn’t hear. He also sometimes has trouble with his hearing. But, strangely, only occasionally. However, Mrs S looks up info on the homepage Mrs S thinks it would be nice to go by the red train. Mr S packs me up and the three of us go downtown to catch the red train, It’s scheduled departure from Plaza de Los Cangrejos with stops at Maro and Cueva de Nerja.

The schedule of the red train is as follows;

10.00 and every hour on the hour to 19:00, except for 14.00, 15.00 and 19.00 only goes during July and August.

The ticket price (€12 for adults, €8 for kids 6-12, and free for kids under the age of six) includes entry into both the Nerja Caves and Nerja History Museum, and reservation of tickets to the caves must be done prior to getting on the train.

The good thing about the train is that you get sightseeing in the town on the way to the caves. Strangely, the red train passes right outside our house, but there are no stops on the way to the caves.

We´re going into the caves via the entrance hall. Everything changes from warm and light to cold and dark. It’s nice and cool on a hot day like this. Here there is an exhibition of findings throughout the years and the ongoing research. Oh, there is a skeleton! There were people here as long ago as 25,000 years BC! Not even Mr S was born then.
The story of how the caves were found is fascinating. A group of boys went looking for bats on May 12, 1959. They went in through a narrow sinkhole known as “La Mina ” and discovered a huge cave system. We walk with a guide through different halls via many stairs. What an astonishing sight! There are stalactites and stalagmites all around. In different shapes and sizes. The biggest stalactite in the world is here. It´s 32 m high! There are also many old wall paintings. When we come to the Ghost hall with its scary shadows I cling on hard to Mr S.
Well, there’s a lot more to tell and, most of all, to see. I put some links below so you can read more. But really, go see it for yourself!

When I come home I will tell Sacky all about the caves. I feel a bit pitty for him that he doesn´t get around so much anymore. From now on I will be nice to him. The best Carrie in the world will be the nicest bag around. Nos vemos!

Introduction to the Bolsas

Hi!

I´m handy. Mrs. Smith´s handbag. I go with her wherever she goes. Yes, even to the bathroom.  I like to say I´m handy and I AM handy. Mrs. Smith has a husband, Mr. Smith (surprisingly) and they have just bought this astonishing new villa Royal Nerja in Nerja in Costa del Sol. From now on I will refer to them as Mrs. S and Mr. S. I see this house every day though I hang on to Mrs. S. It´s totally another world compared to the old flat in London, where we used to live. Everything is new with light colours and shining surfaces. The Villa has three floors and is very spacious. Outside it has its own pool. I actually got the chance to try it out when Mrs. S dropped me in it yesterday. It was nice and cool. I don’t get the chance to go swimming, so Mr. S took the opportunity to go for a quick swim too. And while he was there he took the opportunity and saved me from getting fully soaked.

What’s different about this blog is that we get to make our voices heard. We mean me (Handy) and my friends: a bunch of bags (Bolsas in Spanish) that make life easier for the Smith couple. Now Mrs. S is unpacking the box where my friends are. I can see it all from the table where I stand. There’s a bag hanger on the wall outside Mrs. and Mrs. S´s bedroom.

First, she takes Gucciana, the Gucci handbag – my worst contributor. She is very nice looking but demands a lot of attention. Pain in the ass really (sorry). Of course, she gets the hook on top.

Then we have Carrie, Mr. S´s backpack. She is always nice. But brags a bit because Mr. S so often chooses her on his adventures. I call her the Brag bag.

Now I see Paddly, the Paddle bag. He´s handsome and polite, but stiff. Lacks personality if you ask me.

Oh, there is Beachy, the beach bag. Full of jokes and funny stories.
“Where are ya´?” he says. “Ah, of course, to the beach in Nerja!”

Mrs. S is now taking a break and heading for the pool. There are more bags to come. She will unpack them later; Cooly, the cooling bag, Sacky, the worn-out backpack (I wonder why they keep him really). Golfy, the golfing bag is on the lowest floor. Probably in the car. He only hangs out with Mr. S. It would be nice to see the golf course. I wonder if I ever will. Mrs. S doesn´t play golf. But she goes to the gym with Gymmie, the gym bag, while Mr. S is golfing. Mr. S sometimes says that she doesn´t need to go there because of my weight. I contain so many things that only a cargo ship stows more.

It´s a sweet couple Mrs. and Mr. S. They argue some, like all married couples, but love each other. All of us bags are so excited to join them on their trips to their new neighbourhood Nerja. Stay tuned.
